Early Years Foundation Stage

At John Donne Church of England Primary School, we believe in providing a secure
foundation for the future learning and development of our children. All staff value every
child as a unique individual who can flourish.

Every child has access to a broad, balanced and intentional curriculum which prepares them
both for now and for the future. We are guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage
Framework and principles, which focuses on seven areas of learning: personal, social and
emotional development; physical development; communication and language; literacy;
mathematical development; Understanding of the world and Expressive Art and Design.
Our school fully supports the principle that young children learn through play. Our Nursery
and Reception classes work very closely together. All children have access to free- flow
continuous provision across both classrooms and our large outdoor area.

We aim to provide all children, regardless of their starting points at entry, with a wide range
of rich opportunities and experiences.  We do also follow children’s personal interests and
individual needs in order to support their learning and development and ensure that they
achieve their next steps. The Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning underpin our
teaching. In EYFS we regularly assess children and identify their next steps. Progress is
recorded in observations that make up the children’s individual learning journeys. We work
collaboratively with parents and carers to encourage children to become independent,
enthusiastic learners who thrive and reach their full potential. We have regular contact with
parents through Class Dojo, See- Saw, Parent’s Evenings and termly reports.
